School Curriculum

School Curriculum

The school follows the national educational standards and works with curricula approved by the Ministry of Education and Science for high schools with intensive foreign language studies. Meridian 22 is also a school where the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is implemented in the 11th and 12th grades.

The academic year is divided into two terms, with the start and end dates announced annually by the Minister of Education and Science. The holiday schedule for each academic year is also determined by a decree from the Minister of Education and Science. The school year consists of 36 weeks for grades 8 to 11 and 31 weeks for grade 12.

Subjects Studied:

  • In Grade 8: Bulgarian Language and Literature, English Language, Mathematics, Entrepreneurship, Philosophy, Information Technology, Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education and Sport.
  • In Grade 9: Bulgarian Language and Literature, English Language, a second foreign language (German/Spanish), Mathematics, Information Technology, History and Civilisation, Geography and Economics, Philosophy, Entrepreneurship, Biology and Health Education, Chemistry and Environmental Protection, Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education and Sport.
  • In Grade 10: Bulgarian Language and Literature, English Language, a second foreign language (German/Spanish), Mathematics, Information Technology, History and Civilisation, Geography and Economics, Philosophy, Economics, Biology and Health Education, Chemistry and Environmental Protection, Visual Arts, Music, Physical Education and Sport.


At the end of Grade 10, students take National External Evaluation (NSE) exams in Bulgarian Language and Literature, and Mathematics, and receive a certificate confirming the completion of the first stage of high school education. The second stage includes Grades 11 and 12.

  • In Grade 11: Bulgarian Language and Literature, English Language, a second foreign language (German/Spanish), Mathematics, Civic Education, Physical Education and Sport.
  • In Grade 12: Bulgarian Language and Literature, English Language, a second foreign language (German/Spanish), Mathematics, History and Civilisation, Civic Education, Geography and Economics, Physical Education and Sport.


The five-year education for the Bulgarian Secondary School Diploma ends with final exams in Bulgarian Language and Literature, and a compulsory exam in one of the specialised subjects. Only subjects studied in Grades 11 and 12 are included in the diploma.

Bulgarian High School Diplomas are awarded in June of the year the student graduates from Grade 12.

The two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, conducted during the last two years of high school, culminates in an exam session administered by the IB with globally standardised exams and international external evaluation. In addition to external assessments, each subject undergoes internal evaluation, which is moderated by the IB. The IB results are released on 6 July for IB schools worldwide, and the diplomas are awarded at the end of August.
